Summer Vacation?
Author: Ernie FitzpatrickThe summer is now two thirds over so have you taken your vacation yet? The costs have many people backing off of those far away destination places as well as the expensive place such as Disney World; however, having just talked to one who came from there, the lines wouldn't give you a clue that there's a recession.
Here in Texas we do things differently than say New York!
Texans are cutting back and fetching that old tent out of the attic and headed for a State Park, which coincidently, isn't as easy as you might think. Reservations at State Parks are full to over flowing. But, if you don't need something fancy, you can still find a place by a creek to hang out. However, if you are in New York, you could get an all expense vacation to Paris- for your family. There's one hitch though.
It's a one way ticket! :-)
New York city is buying one way plane tickets for homeless families to leave the city. Yep, for real! It's part of a program by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration to keep the homeless out of the expensive shelter system, which costs $36,000 a year per family. More than 550 families have left the city since 2007. All it takes is for a relative to agree to take them in. The city employs a travel agency for domestic travel and the Department of Homeless Services handles international travel.
City officials say there are no limits on where a family can be sent and families can reject the offer. So, if Paris or London is on your vacation plans (for good), just hitch a ride to New York and spend a few nights on the streets and VOILA, Pariiii, here we come!
You don't have to go to Europe. New York city records show that families have been sent to 24 states and five continents, mostly to Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Anywhere but the streets of New York!
